HammondCast Spotlight on Lou Colombo Jon's Journal December 22 2012

*LISTEN TO THE AUDIO HERE: HammondCast Spotlight on Lou Colombo Downloaded 598 times http://archive.org/details/JonHammondHammondCast202KYOURadio Jon Hammond on Lou Colombo Band at Wychmere Harbor Club Harwich Port MA Cape Cod L to R Frank Shea, Lou Colombo, Jack Pena, Jon Hammond at the B3 organ Feb. 2012 Lou Colombo and Jon Hammond in Fort Myers Florida, R.I.P. Lou Colombo From Capecodtoday http://www.capecodtoday.com/blogs/index.php/2012/03/04/lou-colombo-killed?blog=125 Lou Colombo—Mr. Jazz on Cape Cod was killed Saturday night while exiting the parking lot at The Roadhouse Café on San Carlos Blvd. in Fort Myers, Florida. The Musical Director at The Roadhouse Café, Richie Iannuzzi, said that Lou had just played a set before leaving to meet his wife, Noel. In addition to playing at The Roadhouse Café in Fort Myers, Lou also played at Pa Degennaro’s in Ft. Lauderdale. The Roadhouse Café in Fort Myers is owned by Sherri Colombo and her husband Marc Neeley. It is a sister-club to the Roadhouse Café on South Street in Hyannis, Massachusetts, which is owned by David Colombo, Lou’s son, who is also the owner of Colombo’s on Main Street in Hyannis and The Black Cat Restaurant at Hyannis Harbor. Reporting on Lou’s death saddens me greatly. Strangely enough, this very evening—Sunday—I was editing videotape of the last time I worked with Lou at Colombo’s. The video will be in an up-coming Dave Rojay Show on Channel 17, Saturday night at 9:30. The only thing that can be said about Lou is that he was a great guy, a great friend, and a great trumpet player. He played holding his trumpet up with his right hand and blowing out of the right side of his mouth. As a trumpet player myself, I know how difficult this is; but Lou played with ease. He knew all the standards ever written and played them with great feeling and a beautiful tone and he had a tremendous rapport with his audience—a faithful long-running audience that loved him, truly. I have so many memories of working with Lou going back many years in the past. He has appeared in several of my TV programs and he was often at Channel 17 recording for Ivy Sinclair, a producer of jazz television. A couple of years ago, I played with Lou at the Roadhouse Café. Footage of this will also be in the up-coming Dave Rojay Show. Lou told me at the time that he was 82 years old and when I considered the strength and vitality of his playing, I was amazed. As I type this, I am in a state of shock. A cremation for Lou is scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday in Florida with a Memorial Service to follow later on Cape Cod. My wife and I send our condolences to the entire Colombo family. The last time I talked to Lou, we talked about a group picture of Cape Cod jazz artists scheduled for April. This photo shoot organized by jazz drummer, Bart Weisman, was to duplicate the famous photo from the past of renowned jazz artists on the steps of a brownstone in New York. No photo of the jazz artists of Cape Cod will be complete without Lou Colombo in the center. Folks, my mighty SONY TC-158SD Portable Cassette recorder is Back on the Scene like an Akio Morita machine! A couple of adjustments to make and then taking it in the field today for immediate assignment, Jon Hammond http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akio_Morita Akio Morita (盛田 昭夫 Morita Akio, January 26, 1921, Nagoya, Aichi – October 3, 1999, Tokyo) was a Japanese businessman and co-founder of Sony Corporation along with Masaru Ibuka. Akio Morita was born in the village of Kosugaya, Japan. Morita's family was involved in sake, miso and soy sauce production in the Chita Peninsula, Aichi Prefecture since 1665. He was the oldest of four siblings and his father Kyuzaemon trained him as a child to take over the family business. Akio, however, found his true calling in mathematics and physics, and in 1944 he graduated from Osaka Imperial University with a degree in physics. He was later commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Navy, and served in World War II. During his service, Morita met his future business partner Masaru Ibuka in the Navy's Wartime Research Committee. On May 7, 1946, Morita and Ibuka founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo Kabushiki Kaisha (Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, the forerunner of Sony Corporation) with about 20 employees and initial capital of ¥190,000. Ibuka was 38 years old, Morita, 25. Morita's family invested in Sony during the early period and was the largest shareholder. In 1949, the company developed magnetic recording tape and in 1950, sold the first tape recorder in Japan. In 1957, it produced a pocket-sized radio (the first to be fully transistorized), and in 1958, Morita and Ibuka decided to rename their company Sony (sonus is Latin for sound, and Sonny-boys the most common American expression).[2] Morita was an advocate for all the products made by the Sony Corporation. However, since the radio was slightly too big to fit in a shirt pocket, Morita made his employees wear shirts with slightly larger pockets to give the radio a "pocket sized" appearance. In 1960, it produced the first transistor television in the world. In 1973, Sony received an Emmy Award for its Trinitron television-set technology. In 1975, it released the first Betamax home video recorder, a year before VHS format came out. In 1979, the Walkman was introduced, making it the world's first portable music player. In 1984, Sony launched the Discman series which extended their Walkman brand to portable CD products. In 1960, the Sony Corporation of America (SONAM, currently abbreviated as SCA) was established in the United States. In 1961, Sony Corporation was the first Japanese company to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange, in the form of American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), which are traded over-the-counter. Sony bought CBS Records Group, which consisted of Columbia Records, Epic Records and other CBS labels in 1988 and Columbia Pictures Entertainment (Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures and others) in 1989. On November 25, 1994, Morita stepped down as Sony chairman after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage while playing tennis. He was succeeded by Norio Ohga, who had joined the company in the 1950s after sending Morita a letter denouncing the poor quality of the company's tape recorders — with Akio Morita NAMM 2012 Special Jon Hammond Show HammondCast http://www.viddler.com/v/7e062436 First time to NAMM Show - Suzuki Harmonica artist KOEI TANAKA from Tokyo Japan http://www.tanakakoei.com/ with JOE BERGER aka The Berger-Meister on guitar through Leslie G37 guitar combo amp, SWISS CHRIS getting down with... Run by Mike Mikell[1] and Pat Mikell, from 1969 to 1991 it was a regular venue for New York's top studio and session musicians, who would turn up for jam sessions with major soul, funk and jazz artists visiting the city.[2] Paul Shaffer, bandleader for CBS's Late Show with David Letterman, called Mikell's "soul heaven".[2] Among the performers and bands associated with Mikell’s are Stuff, the alliance of studio musicians that played almost weekly at Mikell's in the 1970s.[2] Writer James Baldwin's brother David worked as a bartender at the club, thereby attracting patronage from Baldwin as well as other authors, including Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou. Stephane Grappelli, French jazz violinist who co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, performed at Mikell's in the mid-1970s. The band Stuff, formed in 1974, was closely associated with Mikell's, playing there three nights a week until 1980, with jam sessions taking place with visiting soul, jazz and funk stars and singers such as Stevie Wonder and Joe Cocker. n early 1980, the club served for rehearsals for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band, which included Wynton Marsalis, and which would result in the live album Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band - Live at Montreux and North Sea (1980).[3] Other artists appearing at the club in the 1980s included Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton and Mickey Roker (June 1983[4]), Paquito D'Rivera (January 1984[5]). In the past, a Hammond B3 organ weighed 425 pounds (without the Leslie speaker) so it was not possible for me to take one to Europe. In 1991, I got the first really portable model. It was one of the first 10 prototypes of the Ham- mond-Suzuki XB-2, with multi-voltage for any- where in the world. I flew over to Germany with it on Pakistan Airlines. I found that by using a Kart-A-Bag Super 600 heavy-duty luggage cart with “stair slides” (like what UPS and FedEx uses), I could hoist it up on to any train or bus. I traveled all over Europe this way, and was pic- tured doing it eventually in a magazine ad for Kart- A-Bag for quite a while. They had a contest going for a long time where they would give away one “Ham- mond Super 600 Kart-A-Bag” every month from a drawing. I jokingly refer to it as my “tour bus.” I see a lot of bands touring with big tour buses and they look real nice and comfy but they also burn a lot of fuel. With my technique I ride on the high speed trains in Germany, the local trains, up and down in the Metro of Paris and in Prague on the street cars. One way to go green is to skip the tour bus altogether. — at Frankfurt (Main) Hauptbahnhof Jon Hammond with Brian Rothschild Co-Founder, Executive Director at DASVentures Ltd/ The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus at Zabar's on the Upper West Side Manhattan photo by "Amy" at Zabar's *About The John Lennon Bus: http://www.lennonbus.org/about_the_bus “This is precisely the kind of project John Lennon would have loved.” - Yoko Ono Lennon The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus is a non-profit 501(c)(3) state-of-the-art mobile audio and HD video recording and production facility.
